As a matter of fact the name of each day of the week that we use today comes from, and represents a pagan god. Sunday, of course, was named after the Roman worship of the “Sun god.”
Monday is short for the worship of “Moon Day”, the moon god – which is where Islam comes from. Hence, the crescent moon is their symbol. Many cultures throughout history worshiped both the sun and the moon. Some still do today. Unfortunately, so do many Christians and they don’t even realize it.
Tuesday comes from the old English “Tiws day,” which originates from the Latin, “dies Martis,” or the day of Mars – Mars is the Roman god of war.
Wednesday comes from the old English “Wodens day.” Woden was the Anglo-Saxon Teutonic god of the northern Germanic tribes of the 9th century AD. In Latin it was called, “dies Mercurii,” or day of Mercury. Mercury was the Roman god of travel, commerce, cunning, and theft.
Thursday comes from “Thors day,” Thor being the god of thunder, in old English it was called, “Thunders day.” It also originates from the northern Germanic tribes. The Roman God “Jove” (Jupiter) was said to be the creator of thunder and lightning; the Romans called Thursday, in Latin “dies Jove” (Jove Day).
Friday comes from Freya’s day; Freya was the Teutonic god of love, beauty, and prolific procreation, and also a northern Germanic tribal creation. The Roman’s called it the Latin, “dies Veneris,” (Venus Day). To the Romans Venus was the god of love and beauty.
And last but not least is Saturday, which comes from the Roman worship of the god of Saturn. In Latin it is “dies Saturni.” Saturn was the Roman god of agriculture.
The Christmas season or the week between Christmas and what we call New Years Day, was derived from a Roman holiday called Saturnalia. Saturnalia was a week-long celebration of the winter solstice – December 25th on the Julian Calendar – when the days would begin to get longer again. Saturnalia was held during this same week in the month of December.
Christmas is not a biblical holy day. Jesus’ birth is mentioned, of course, but not the date of His birth. It is a man-made creation because Jesus could not have been born on December 25th. No one knows Christ’s exact birth date, but we do know that based on scripture, it could not have been in December because the shepherd’s would not have been out with their flock that time of year because the nights would have been too cold. It was another case of merging Christianity with paganism, thus another example of how Christianity has been tainted.
I mentioned above New Years Day; the day we observe as the turn of the New Year, January 1st. This day is also man-made, as far as being the beginning of the year. It is clear in scripture that Abib 1, which falls in either March or April of our Gregorian calendar, is the beginning of our years (Exodus 12:2; 13:3-4).
Today the Jewish people observe Rosh Hashanah, which is Hebrew meaning, “the head of the year.” This is the Holy Day the Bible calls Yom Teruah, which means, “the blowing of trumpets.” As the Bible states in Leviticus chapter 23, this day falls on the first day of the seventh month, not the first day of the first month. So, why do the Jews celebrate it as the new year?
When the Jews were taken into captivity by Nebuchadnezzar of the Babylonian Empire, the were held captive for 70 years, which to many is a generation of people. During this time the Jews lost their identity and much of their traditions and acquired Babylonian traditions. When they were released from their captivity and went back to the land of Israel, they took with them the habits they learned while in captivity.
The Babylonian calendar began in the fall, in the month of Tishri. Before their captivity, there were no names for the months of the year except for the month of Abib, which God had named Himself. Any other reference to a month before their captivity, it referred to the month in the number order in which it falls. In other words, month number two, would be the second month of the year, month three, the third month, and so on.
To this day, the Jews still hold on to the first day of the seventh month as a beginning of their civil year and Abib 1 as the beginning of their religious year. And what is astounding to what I just explained, most Jews themselves have no clue to this fact that they are following Babylonian traditions with their calendar. They even changed the name of the first month, which God called Abib, and renamed the month to Nisan, which was the Babylonian name for that month.
I mentioned earlier that the answer to the “why” questions was very easy and simple to answer, yet many find the answer condemning. The reason they do is because God is not a God of chaos, but is a God of order. Chaos only comes into our lives when we stray from Godly truth and open ourselves up to the satanic realm, which is not hard to do because it is all around us. So much of the chaos after we experience it, we then ask God, “why did You allow that,” when it was really self-inflicted. Yet, people don’t want to hear that.
Yes, there will be troubles that will confront us in this life, and many of those troubles will have nothing to do with us or what we’ve done. Remember we live in a fallen world and sometimes things happen that are out of our control, but instead of asking God “why,” we need to realize we live in a fallen world due to the sins of mankind and not just our own sins. God has nothing to do with the ills of this world, regardless of what they are.
God created this world perfect for us to inhabit. The Garden of Eden was a paradise for Adam and Eve. All the food they needed grew naturally out of the ground. The pure water they needed sprung up from springs of living water.
That is until Satan stepped in disguised as a serpent and deceived both Adam and Eve into eating the fruit from the forbidden tree. It was then that everything changed, and the paradise that God had given them, God now needed to remove them from in order to salvage His plan for them.
Although I’ve strayed a bit from the main topic, are you beginning to see how much of what we consider to be of Christian origin is really a product of deception, misunderstanding, and compromise throughout the history of mankind? And I’ve only touched the very tip of the iceberg in this article.
In future articles, I will go much deeper and explain why God has to allow us to go through this life and face all the problems life throws at us, even though He has nothing to do with those problems. Can He stop them? Yes, He could, but there is a very good reason why He doesn’t, and one that if He did stop them would implode His whole creation!
